To deepen in the discussion about the concepts of CULTURE, IDENTITY and HERITAGE we'll watch the documentary “Baraka”, created by Ron Fricke and produced by Mark Magidson in 1992.
The doc runs without comments or storytelling sharing images filmed in 24 countries. The narrative is developed by scene montages and sequences, backed-up and enhaced by music and sound. In its contents raised a critical glance about the industrial culture and the loss of spiritual values in our modern society.
There is a discussion among cultures, religions, human relations and its natural surroundings fostering a critical reflection about the industrial society, its ways of generating violence, the constructiona and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage

Culture, Identity and heritage from a tourism perspective relate in a way in which each concept enriches, nurtures and evolves from each other. We as a part of society, shared a common set of beliefs, codes, language, rituals and others inherited from past generations who make up this general concept of culture. The way in which we see ourselves in the past, the present and the future as a society and as individuals immerse in this culture, establishes our sense of identity. Although identity, that which makes us unique, diverse, and different seems to differentiate ourselves from other cultures it also connects us. For as the film portrays, some things are intrinsically common to all human beings and is through tourism that we can fully understand that notion. Storytelling in tourism works as a cultural mediator between locals and foreigners through a process of collaborative co-creation. As mediators, we interpret the symbols to communicate an authentic narrative in which the audience see itself reflected and engaged to share its own story thus the co-creative process produces a synergy between tourist and residents that enhances the overall experience of traveling.
ResponderBorrarTourism opens the doors of knoledge to new religions and cultures and heritage that are practically unkown to us and wich are just as important as ours and must be respected in the same way.
ResponderBorrarAlso the transition from one era to other is really amazing. The connection between every clip transport you to a time-line that never stop.
We need all the subjects, that we talked before, to be a better human, to be a better person, a better version of us and teach it to others and start constructing a new era of respect.
Our opinion with Nicole Araya is that the culture, heritage and identity have to do with how different countries express themselves, the history behind them, the path they have. Also the three concepts are connected because every spirituality of the human being has an identity and a story to tell thanks to the culture where they come from. In the same way, the natural/cultural heritage promotes a unique identity of each sector to preserve a history so in this way this will benefit tourism in general because many people will visit these places with the intention of getting to know more of the cultures and identity that the place has to offer.
ResponderBorrarCatalina Martínez and Mabel Orrego. In tourism, identity, culture, and heritage are closely related. First, the identity is whatever thing, action, behavior identifies and represent a group of people; which can be a tribe, a clan, a family, or more. This identity can be related to the environment in which they live, the behaviors they have, the traditions, etc. On the other hand, culture can be explained as the expression of this identity though out a great amount of people, who can be identified under these characteristics. They recognize their culture and live by it. Finally, heritage can be defined as how this culture is transfered through every generation.
ResponderBorrarThe documentary represent these concepts through out the film. How the different types of ethnic groups have their own way to connect with their spirituality and environment, how to live their meetings and how they define what is important for them, some based on their religion. But we can also see how as the humanity develops into a more technological era, we as a humanity are losing track of our heritage and changing it for a more automatized way of living.
Culture and heritage play a crucial role in the shaping of our identity,. The concepts of heritage, identity and tourism are intertwined and mutually reinforce each other, as tourism offers a gateway to showcase our culture and heritage, which in turn help shape our identity.
ResponderBorrarTourism provides us with unique opportunities to showcase our cultural heritage to the world and allow people to appreciate and learn from it. It can encourage pride and admiration for our own culture while allowing us to experience and appreciate the cultures of other countries. By immersing ourselves in different heritages, we acquire new perspectives, values and beliefs, enriching our own cultural identity.
In essence, tourism is an enriching experience that can help promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding between people from different backgrounds. By exploring new cultures and embracing diversity, we can broaden our horizons and deepen our appreciation for the world we live in. Thus, tourism has the power to not only enrich our culture but also our lives.
Our opinion with Javiera Padilla about the relationship between heritage, culture and identity present in the documentary is that it creates a new way to connect and get to know better the different cultures present in the world, leaving aside the differences from one to another but highlighting their main characteristics, in other words, their identities, and not just focusing on the landscapes but catching the daily living of people. From the touristic point of view we reflect that it is important to remain together those three elements in order to protect and respect the different cultures of this world.
ResponderBorrarHeritage is a fundamental thing to any society, that we as humans have the privilege and responsibility to maintain.
ResponderBorrarNowadays we hear the slogan ‘a town with no memory is doomed to repeat it’. This is of course in a negative and pessimistic light, but it also applies to the essence of everything, really. Nothing of what we see, what we have or what we have experienced is truly new, the uniqueness comes on how we choose to act with that knowledge. Our families, countries, customs and values systems are a fraction of what we are as a persons and communities.
Tourism ends up being one of the most authentic and special paths to portray this identity. Using tools such as storytelling, it achieves to show what it’s really like to be in the shoes of that part of the world that the visitor is meeting. What are the problems and challenges, but also what is that makes them proud, what makes them connect with each other, what are their beliefs, what little things and traditions they will continue until the end of days because it is something that really matters to them, for the future generations and for the ones that have already passed and created all.
We have to always remember our heritage, for we will not be anything without it.
Culture, Identity and Heritage are one in the same, they cannot exist without each other, they all have in common that is something unique from a group of people, something or someone that differenciates from the rest and I think tourism is the best way to transmit this message to the world, it has all the tools to do it, to connect with people and to preserve something that is slowly getting lost in time that people don't realize that without it we won´t have that special factor in us
ResponderBorrarThe following is an analysis wrote by K. Alexandra Garces and Catalina Espinoza.
ResponderBorrarWe as human beings are what our ancestors were, the heritage and culture is what made us what we are today. The way our identity can be helped to be seen thanks to tourism is what makes this industry so unique;
since the different cultures, customs and heritage are so important in tourism, the industry has the responsibility to protect and preserve them, whether historical sites, lifestyles, customs, religions, dialects, buildings, all that diversity that is shown in the documentary Baraka, in addition to showing the importance of these and be respectful of the communities and the environment.

ResponderBorrarIdentity, Culture and Heritage are three concepts that are closely related, both in meaning and in the fact that one can very rapidly lead to the other. Your identity, in one way or another, is closely related to your culture, which then with the passage of time becomes your heritage. (The one you earn and the one that you leave for the future.)
In this sense, my opinion is that humans by our intrinsic nature as social beings cannot live without a backdrop of heritage and culture, to us the necessity of including ourselves in communities of our own creation is as important and vital as breathing and eating, and to be deprived of any of these concepts is to live a life that is objectively stunted and worsened by such an absence.
We yearn for belonging and a sense of self, and one of the largest pillars upon which we build our Identities is Culture, which is a direct result of our Heritage.
